Mourning period, condolences and the days after
Three days of mourning, ta'ziyah, the widow's waiting period and the customs on the 7th, 40th and 52nd day.
The Islamic mourning period lasts three days. During this time, relatives, neighbours and the community come to offer condolences (ta'ziyah), bring food and read from the Quran together. The grieving family does not have to cook or organise anything during these days.
For widows, the waiting period (iddah) of four months and ten days applies. It is religiously prescribed and is meant to give the woman time; it has no legal significance in Germany.
Custom, not obligation: in Turkish and many other families, the Quran is read and prayers are said for the deceased (Mevlit) on the seventh, fortieth and fifty-second day after the death. This is tradition, not a religious requirement. Those who do not do it miss nothing.
What helps: visiting the grave, giving charity for the deceased (sadaqah), doing good in their name. And allowing yourself time. If you notice that the grief is not easing, help is available from Muslim chaplains, for example through the community, or from the Telefonseelsorge crisis helpline (0800 111 0 111, free of charge, around the clock).
