The burial funds of the associations, SCHURA as the representative body of Hamburg's Muslims, and the authorities responsible in the event of a death.

Burial funds

In the event of a death, a fund covers repatriation to the country of origin and in some cases the burial. Membership must exist beforehand, often with a waiting period.

  • Issues the Leichenpass (mortuary passport) for all of Hamburg, usually within one working day

  • Registration of the death at the Standesamt (registry office) of the district where the death occurred

Must be reported by the third working day after the death at the latest. First death certificate 19,50 €, each further copy 8,50 €, free for pension purposes. Processing takes 3 to 10 days, also online via the Serviceportal.

  • Covers the cost of a simple, dignified funeral if the relatives cannot afford it

Not included

  • The estate and the Sterbevierteljahr (three months of survivor's pension) are offset first

Apply at the social services office of the district where the deceased lived. Documents: death certificate, proof of assets and income, bank statements for the last three months, certificate of inheritance or disclaimer, funeral director's invoice. An online application is available.
